The former Universiti Malaya (UM) vice-chancellor, Datuk Rafiah Salim is quoted here saying: “But now, UM is the only public university left offering a BA in history.
The swing towards the sciences, therefore, is hardly surprising. It is the whole approach taken by the education authorities.“
Now, here is the one-million-dollar question: is this a genuine mistake (read: pure ignorance) from the former vice-chancellor? Or, it simply proves what we have known for years: that ‘people over there’ always reluctant to give us the credit we deserve. Instead of trying to get the fact right (i.e. what we offer and what we don’t) — they just conveniently assume. As if there is no life beyond peninsular.
Bagi yang tidak tahu, sebenarnya Program Sejarah di bawah Sekolah Sains Sosial (UMS) telah pun menawarkan Ijazah Sarjana Muda dalam bidang ini atas meritnya sebagai satu disiplin tersendiri (selepas ‘berpisah’ secara rasmi daripada Progam Hubungan Antarabangsa). Kini usia Ijazah Sarjana Muda Sejarah (UMS) sudah mencecah lebihkurang sedekad!
