29 November 2009: Sekolah Sains Sosial sungguh bertuah kerana mendapat kunjungan seorang sarjana terkemuka dan tokoh hak asasi sedunia, Prof. Richard Falk. Beliau kini memegang portfolio sebagai Rapporteur Khas kepada PBB khusus untuk isu-isu bersabit hak asasi penduduk Palestine. Tokoh ini telah berdiskusi secara tertutup dengan beberapa orang tenaga akademik di UMS, bersabit hal-ehwal hak asasi dalam konteks akademik. Kedatangan beliau bersama isterinya adalah inisiatif Prof. Dr. Sabihah Osman dan Program Hubungan Antarabangsa, menerusi jalinan usahasama dengan Dr. Chandra Muzaffar.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jacqueline Pugh-Kitingan, holder of the UMS Kadazandusun Chair, was recently appointed Adjunct Research Fellow in Anthropology, from the School of Political and Social Inquiry, Monash University, Australia. This is an honorary annual appointment.

1 – 8 July 2009 (South Africa): Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jacqueline Pugh-Kitingan, who holds the UMS Kadazandusun Chair, recently presented some of her ethnomusicological research on the ritual world of the Lotud Dusun of Tuaran, Sabah, at the ICTM 40th World Conference in South Africa.

The 16th International Conference on Learning (ICL09) was held this year in Barcelona, Spain, from July 1st to 4th. It was organized by the College of Education, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. The Learning Conference is held annually in different locations around the world. As the presenter and participant at the conference, I would like to give you my impressions about the conference and the time spent in Barcelona.

The conference brought together over 350 participants from 30 countries around the globe representing national policy makers, institutional leaders, professors, researchers, students, economic and professional sectors, intergovernmental organizations, higher education networks, as well as the civil society. The 16th International Conference on Learning featured the work of 200 practitioners from 30 countries around the world.
